Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy
1. Overview of the Federal Government's Approach to Sustainable Development
The Policy on Green Procurement supports the Government of Canada's effort to promote environmental stewardship. In keeping with the objectives of the policy, the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) supports sustainable development by integrating environmental performance considerations into the procurement decision-making process through the activities in this supplementary information table.
Although the Agency is not bound by the Federal Sustainable Development Act and is not required to develop a departmental sustainable development strategy (FSDS), CanNor adheres to the principles of the FSDS by implementing the Policy on Green Procurement.

As of April 1, 2014, the Government of Canada will continue to take action to embed environmental considerations into public procurement, in accordance with the federal Policy on Green Procurement.
Scope and Context
CanNor is committed to the Policy on Green Procurement and, therefore, integrates green procurement practices into its operations. The Agency is committed to the use of information and communication technologies to reduce the impact of the geographic distance between its offices while also reducing some of the environmental impacts arising from operations.

CanNor will use Public Works and Government Services Canada green procurement instruments where they are not in contradiction with land claims objectives. In some cases, the use of these instruments may contradict the objectives of comprehensive land claims agreements in communities where CanNor has offices. In these instances, CanNor will determine how to meet the principles of green procurement while respecting to the objectives of these agreements. | Aiming to Achieve |
Strategic Environmental Assessment
CanNor will continue to ensure that its decision-making process includes consideration of Federal Sustainable Development Act goals and targets through the Strategic Environmental Assessment process. An Strategic Environmental Assessment process for policy, plan or program proposals includes an analysis of the impacts of the given proposal on the environment, including on Federal Sustainable Development Act goals and targets.
Statements on the results of CanNor's detailed assessment will be made public when an initiative is announced. The purpose of the public statement is to demonstrate that the environmental effects, including the impacts on achieving the FSDS goals and targets, of the approved policy, plan or program have been considered during proposal development and decision making.
