Northern Canada Producer Accelerator

Local crews work behind the scene.

Canada's territories are full of big, bold stories to tell, and many talented people ready to bring them to life.

That is why the Screen Production Yukon Association (SPYA), a non-profit society and the primary industry organization supporting the Yukon film and screen media, is working in partnership with the Northwest Territories Professional Media Association, Yukon Media Development, and the Northwest Territories Film Commission to deliver the Northern Canada Producer Accelerator (NCPA).

The NCPA is a joint initiative between the Yukon and the Northwest Territories which aims to support film producers across both territories in advancing their projects and bringing them to market. Through the program, which launched in March 2022, 10 content producers  are participating in a series of workshops and training sessions related to film and screen media. Participants are paired with skilled industry mentors and contacts to help develop and market their projects. The training, mentorship, networking and market access are invaluable to participants as they build interest, experience and confidence in the field.

This project addresses the critical role of producers, who are responsible for the financial and managerial aspects of making a film, and it strengthens Northern perspectives and influence in media. Increased diversity and representation both on screen and behind the camera empowers participants and their communities, and it educates and inspires viewers across the territories and beyond.

The NCPA is the first program of its kind to be jointly supported by six national Canadian broadcasters and funders: Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN), Bell Media, Blue Ant Media, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Corus Entertainment, and Rogers Group of Funds. In addition to CanNor funding, this level of sector support is crucial to strengthening the impact of this initiative.
